About the event

The Hammond Historical Society, the United Steelworkers [USW] and Steelworkers Association of Active Retirees [SOAR] invite you to join us at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 14, 2024, as we unveil a monument to honor the memory of the four Standard Steel Car Co. workers killed and 62 injured during a strike dispute 105 years ago at Highland St. and Columbia Ave. Their sacrifice was in the struggle for labor rights and stronger unions. All are welcome to attend!

Speakers and musicians playing old union songs from the time period will be part of a wreath-laying ceremony upon the new granite marker located outside the Ophelia Steen Center. (5927 Columbia Ave. - NE corner of Highland & Columbia). Following the formal ceremony, refreshments will be served inside, alongside displays of historic photos from that fateful day.  A book detailing the event which was published by the Society will be available for purchase.

We hope you and your family as well as your members and their families, if applicable, can make it out on this crisp September morning to recognize a part of Hammond and Calumet Region history that has been too often overlooked.
